UTV Popularity Contest

Friday, November 12th, 2010

UTV’s are taking over the motorsports industry and provide a more stable and familiar experience to the average rider. Riding a UTV is much like driving a car (on steroids) with an automatic transmission. The objective of this article is to help familiarize people with how to ride an off road utility vehicle.

Many important safety features have been added to these awesome machines. Roll cages protect you if roll over, and seatbelts should be worn at all times. Many of these have half doors and shoulder cages as well to help keep the rider inside the cockpit.

Easy to ride is what these are becoming famous for. Most manufacturers are making their models with an automatic transmission so that riders can just shift into gear and press down on the gas pedal and go. Doesn’t get much simpler than that. Push button electric 4wd also takes the strain of pulling hard on that four wheel drive knob to try and find a gear out of the equation.

The most popular utility vehicles will come with a Digital Dash to give the rider important information about speed, rpms, fuel levels, and gear you are in while you are riding. Other creature comforts include drink holders, 12v electrical outlets, tilt steering, and adjustable seats. Get used to a lot more comfort on the trails.

There are a few things you should look for when you are thinking about buying a UTV. If you are planning to race or ride it all the time in extreme terrain you should loosen the purse strings and plan on spending $15,000 and buy the best one. Realistically, most people who are looking to buy an all terrain vehicle don’t fall in this category. Hisun makes several models in 500, 700, and 800 models that come equipped nicely and appear to be a Yamaha Rhino clone for less than $7,000. They still perform well on the trail from the videos on YouTube that are out there and cost almost half the price for a brand new unit.

UTV manufacturers are popping up everywhere! Here is a list of reputable manufacturers of these machines to choose from. Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki, Artic Cat, Hisun, Benneche, CanAm, RedLine, Ruesh, Honda, Husqvarna, Kymco USA, Kubota, Bobcat, Cub Cadet, Bushhog, John Deere, Kazuma, Dirmo, Pug, Tomcat, Qlink, and BamX.
